FENCE RULES – LAGRANGE (CITY), GEORGIA

PERMIT AND APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS

FENCE PLACEMENT RULES
• Setback Encroachments: Under Sec. 25B-15-3(a)(1), fencing may encroach into required front, side, and rear yard setbacks by up to 3 feet, but it must be no closer than 3 feet to the side or rear property line.
• Public Right-of-Way: Front-yard fences shall not extend into the public right-of-way.
• Fence and Retaining Wall Combinations: A fence erected within 5 feet of the top of a retaining wall is regulated under the fence-and-retaining-wall standards in Sec. 25B-15-5(e).
• Utility Safety: Georgia law requires notice to the Utilities Protection Center (Georgia 811) before excavation with mechanized equipment. The locate request effective date must be not less than two (2) business days and not more than eight (8) business days after the request is received, and work under that locate request may not begin more than 30 calendar days after the effective date.
FENCE HEIGHT AND VISIBILITY RULES
• Front Yard Height: Front-yard fences shall not exceed 4 feet in height. Fence posts and pillars may be 1 foot higher than the maximum height allowed for the remaining fence elements.
• Interior Side and Rear Yard Height: Fences in interior side and rear yards shall not exceed 8 feet in height.
• Height Measurement: Fence height is measured from the grade plane.
• Corner Lot Visibility: On corner lots in all zoning districts, no fence, shrubbery, sign, or other traffic-line-of-sight obstruction may exceed 30 inches in height within the triangular area formed by the intersection of right-of-way lines and points measured 20 feet along the property line from that intersection.
• Tree Clearance in Visibility Triangle: Within the same corner visibility triangle, tree foliage may not be lower than 10 feet.
• Fence and Retaining Wall Combination Near Front Property Line: If a fence and retaining wall combination is erected within 10 feet of a front-yard property line, the wall may not exceed 2 feet and the fence may not exceed 4 feet.
• Fence and Retaining Wall Combination Elsewhere: In rear-yard locations, the fence and retaining wall may each be up to 8 feet high, but their combined height may not exceed 12 feet. In front-yard locations, the fence and retaining wall may each be up to 4 feet high, but their combined height may not exceed 6 feet.
MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION LIMITS
• Front Yard Materials: For standard residential conditions, front-yard fences may not be made of wire, woven metal, or chain link. They must be ornamental or decorative fences constructed of brick, stone, stucco, split rail, wood, aluminum, or wrought iron.
• Front Yard Transparency: Front-yard fences must be a minimum of 50 percent transparent.
• Prohibited Materials: Exposed block, tires, junk, or other discarded material are prohibited fence materials.
• Interior Side and Rear Yard Metal Fencing: If a fence in an interior side or rear yard is chain link or other metal fencing, it must be vinyl, powder coated, or galvanized.
• Barbed Wire: Standard residential fences are prohibited from using barbed wire.
• Construction Details: Fences shall be maintained in good repair. Posts shall be anchored in concrete. Supports shall be vertical and plumb. Supports shall face inward to the property.
PRIVATE RESTRICTIONS
Private covenants, deed restrictions, and HOA rules operate independently of City of LaGrange regulations and may be more restrictive than the municipal code.
